Terminology/Jargon

Homework activities often state that your child is learning about... so please practise... with them. You're not quite sure what something means so you message your fellow parents on the class Whatsapp group and hope someone knows what you are supposed to do. Your child might mention a term that they have learnt in school but will often struggle to tell you what exactly it means.

Termly parent consulatation meetings come and go and you are told by the class teacher that little Jenny needs to practise phase 5 alternative graphemes to enable her to read more fluently. Meanwhile her brother Jonny needs to cement his understanding of commutativity to help him with his addition and multiplication. You nod and write a few notes down and then before you know it, your slot has ended.

The end of year report will then show areas to consolidate, accompanied by a sentence with more jargon that you mean to check up on with their class teacher.
